Living Conditions

Life during the Industrial Revolution was far from plesent. Life in the cites was crammed, unsanitary, and unheathly.
Your place in society had everything to do with what kind of life you had.

Homes of the poor

''Poor people lived in small houses in crampred streets. These homes would share toilet facilities, have open sewers (initially at least) and would be susceptible to damp. Conditions did improve during the 19th century as a number of public health acts were introduced covereing things such as sewage, sanitation and imposing some restricions upon the construction of homes. '' (Schools History)

Homes of the wealthy

''Cliffe Castle, Keighley, is a good example of how the newly rich chose to live. This is a large home modelled loosely on a castle, woth turrets, towers and imitation crennaltions on the walls of the garden. The home is very large and was surrounded by a massive garden, the estate itself stretching for a number of miles. Cliffe Castle is now open to the public as a museum. Admission is Free. click here to find out how to get there.'' (Schools History)

     Factory Conditions

''Factory work is very different from other types of labor. The introduction of the factory system had a negative effect on living conditions. Factory owners who believed in Social Darwinism and Rugged Individualism did not care much about those who worked in their factories. They believed that if the workers wanted to improve their; lives they had to do it on their own. Also, because no particular strength or skill was required to operate many of the new factory machines the workers were considered unskilled. This meant they were easily replaced.

The owners of the early factories often were most interested in hiring a worker cheaply. Thus they employed many women and children. These workers could be hired for lower wages than men. These low-paid employees had to work for as long as 16 hours a day; they were subjected to pressure, and even physical punishment, in an effort to make them speed up production. Since neither the machines nor the methods of work were designed for safety, many fatal and maiming accidents resulted.

Coal miners also faced difficult work conditions. Mine owners often hired children whose small hands could fit into narrow openings to scrape coal from the mine walls. Working 16 hour days with poor ventilation and frequent cave ins these children might be paid a dollar a day.''(The Social Studies Help Center)

Hard on the Families
The Famileis during the Industrial Revelution went thruogh a lot.  It was hard on the children for they had to go to the factiory every day, and had no time what so ever to play.  They never saw the sun because of the times that they went to work and got homw.  The parents of these children also had to work, but still had troubles with supporting their familise on the wages that they worked for.
Not only would the parents not get paid enough, vut also when they found out that they couldnt afford to have children they would stop havine them.  This would would make it possible for the next generation to have better wages.  This was what David Ricardo believed  happened.  When the people found that they could now afford children with the higher wages, they would have more, and then the buisness men would have more children to chose from and then pay them less.

Problems that accured.

There were many problems that accured during the Industrial Revolution. These included disease, crowded buildings, poor sanitation, class structure, pollution, and clean water. These problems made life very hard and unpleasent. These living conditions did not help those who were already having a hard time working in the factories.

Improvements brought by the Industrial Revelution

The Industrial Revelution brought about many advances in technology. Since the first seed drill to new transpertation systems, people had been coming up with new products and ideas to make life easier for everyone. Of course it was not an easy road, but these new advances and inventions have made life alot better for all of us today.
